Bitwarden FAQ

  1. When should I use my SSW account versus my free Bitwarden for families account?

We recommend that you save work-related passwords in your SSW Bitwarden account. Passwords that need to be shared with your family should be saved in your free Bitwarden for families account.
  1. How do I export passwords from my browser and import them into Bitwarden?

Import data to your individual Bitwarden vault for easy migration from any password management solution.

For a full list of supported import formats, refer to this FAQ item, or use one of these articles for importing from the most popular solutions:
  1. How do I turn off my local browser’s password saving so I am only using Bitwarden to save my passwords?

You will need to manually turn off each browser’s password saving functionality manually. Detailed directions are found here.
  1. What happens to my free Bitwarden for families plan if I leave SSW?

If you leave or are removed from the sponsoring organization, or if you manually end your sponsorship, your payment method on file will be charged at the next billing interval. Alternatively, you may cancel your families/premium account (which will remove your families vault) and revert to a free Bitwarden account, retaining only your “my vault.”
  1. Why do I need Bitwarden? Is it secure?

Bitwarden is a password manager that generates, stores, and secures important digital assets in an end-to-end encrypted vault. Users can access their data from anywhere, on any device (desktop, laptop, mobile devices) with secure cloud syncing. It fully encrypts all user data before it ever leaves the user’s device; only the user has access to it.

Bitwarden can store all your passwords securely, so you don’t have to worry about remembering them. This allows you to use unique, strong passwords for all your important accounts (rather than using the same password for all of them, which you should never do. For more information about Bitwarden’s security can be found here
  1. What is the master password for?

The password is initially used to setup your account. Once you have been onboarded to SSW’s enterprise Bitwarden organization, you can only sign in with your NetID and password. Your master password will then only be used to approve first time logins from new devices (computers, phones, tablets) or browsers.
  1. How do I approve devices to access Bitwarden?

When you login to your Bitwarden account from a new device or browser, you will need to approve the device by selecting the option “Approve with master password.” This is the fastest and recommended option to approve devices and browsers.
